Because a digital camera requires lots of power to pull off its digital magic, especially when its flash feature is used, battery makers often point to this device as a real-world measuring stick that most people can relate to. The following minitable provides a snapshot of rechargeable-battery capacity and longevity based on the number of pictures per charge that Rayovac estimates can typically be snapped per battery type. Most battery manufacturers recommend higher-capacity rechargeable batteries for digital cameras, whereas low-powered, low-drain gadgets such as TV remote control devices can run for many months on less pricey rechargeables.
Rechargeable battery chargers are available in many shapes and sizes. The most commonly sold chargers hold two to four AA or AAA batteries, or a combination of both types of batteries. Just like with your other portable gadgets, making energy-saving adjustments to your digital camera or camcorder that extend battery life can increase the number of shots or hours of footage you can capture. And as with all portable gadgets that have backlit screens, turning down the brightness uses less battery juice. For even longer camera and camcorder battery life Deactivate your digital camera's flash setting and your camcorder's spotlight. Doing so prevents you from accidentally using either feature and extends battery life. Turn them on when you need them, and turn them off when you don't. Stay in charge. Bringing along a second or third rechargeable battery can keep the action rolling throughout the day. Plugging in between shooting sessions to keep the battery topped off is another way to stay in charge of the battery on your camera or camcorder so that it lasts as long as possible.

Turning off the Bluetooth devices that you connect to your Mac, such as a headset and mouse, helps extend their battery life so that you don't need to recharge them so often. My favorite Mac mouse is the Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000, which runs on two AAA batteries (I use rechargeable ones, of course) and automatically enters Sleep mode after a few minutes of inactivity.
Some authors have argued that expending energy reduces longevity (e.g., Calder 1985). According to this view, a high workload reduces the life span, in the same way that overusing a flashlight more quickly leads to a dead battery. More recent authors offer more sophisticated interpretations. Some argue that energetic expenditure can reduce longevity by compromising an organism's immune response (Richner et al. 1995), while others argue that reproductive effort accelerates senescence (Gustaffson and Part 1990). There is a strong trend in the computer industry towards lighter and, in many cases, portable machines. These smaller machines have lower material demand, contain fewer toxic materials (except the batteries) and tend to be energy-efficient. Batteries are of particular concern because of their high toxic content, their relatively short lifetime and their tendency to be mixed with other solid waste. The heavy metal content of batteries is a significant contributor to the toxicity of municipal solid waste incinerators. Unlike the case of car lead acid batteries and recycling systems common in Western Europe, the USA does not have comprehensive systems in place for recycling computer batteries. Some computer manufacturers accept returned batteries for recycling, but the practice is not widespread. Recycled hazardous wastes are known as recyclable materials. These materials remain hazardous, and their identification as recyclable materials does not exempt them from regulation. With certain exceptions, recyclable materials are subject to the requirements for generators, transporters, and storage facilities. The exceptions are wastes regulated by other sections of the regulations and wastes that are exempt, including waste recycled in a manner constituting disposal waste burned for energy recovery in boilers and industrial furnaces waste from which precious metals are reclaimed or spent lead-acid batteries being reclaimed. Wastes generally exempt from regulation are reclaimed industrial ethyl alcohol, used batteries or cells returned to a battery manufacturer for regeneration, scrap metal, and materials generated in a petroleum refining facility. Recycled used oil is subject to used oil management standards (Part 279 of RCRA).

When tracking on foot, it is important to have lightweight, robust receivers with simple controls. Many receivers are not waterproof, in which case it must be possible to operate them through plastic bags during rain. A light source is useful at night, and headphones or an ear-plug make it easier to detect faint signals and changes in signal strength. For directional tracking at short range, it should be easy to reduce the signal reception gain to a level at which signals from nearby tags are only just detected. Power supplies should last for at least the length of a tracking day, with reserve power sources available (e.g. plug in battery packs in case an overnight recharge has failed). Antennas should be light and not cumbersome. Yagi antennas with 3 4 elements are very suitable, to give optimal gain and directionality, and can now be obtained with flexible elements that do not impede passage through brush.
First, it is still important to be able to trap the animals to fit them with radiocollars in the first place, and to retrap them whenever the transmitter is lost or the battery runs down. In animal transmitter packages, the batteries use more space and weigh more than all other components combined. A weasel's small size limits how big a transmitter package it can carry and, hence, how long the package will transmit. Materials commonly reprocessed off-site are oils, solvents, electroplating sludges and process baths, scrap metal, and lead-acid batteries.
