Recondition Battery Guide

This Do It Yourself Recondition Battery Guide consists of 21 chapters that will show you step-by-step how to recondition your battery. When a healthy battery is recharged, this lead sulfate is converted back to lead and sulfuric acid. But in tired battery, the lead sulfate changes to a crystalline form that coats the batterys lead plates reducing its capacity. This process is known as sulfation. It is a common occurrence in lead-acid batteries and a major reason for their failure. The good news is that you can often reverse sulfation utilizing a specialized high-current, pulse that effectively breaks down the crystalline lead sulfate and turns it back into lead and sulfuric acid, thus cleaning the lead plates and restoring charge capacity. So before you throw that battery away, consider battery reconditioning as a way to save it. More here...

Sorting Out and Choosing Rechargeable Batteries and Chargers

Getting up to speed on the use of rechargeable batteries (and the chargers that juice them) to replace familiar disposable batteries is the topic I discuss in this section. In the Finding Rechargeable Battery Packs section, near the end of this chapter, I go over your options for replacing the rechargeable battery packs supplied with your cordless or mobile phone, electric toothbrush, portable handheld vacuum cleaner, and notebook computer. Before I get into the details of rechargeable batteries (and chargers), here is a list of general tips Use rechargeable batteries in any gadget that takes alkaline batteries. Recharge rechargeable batteries hundreds of times (typically) to save lots of money over the long haul. Avoid mixing new rechargeable batteries with old ones because a weaker battery (or more) prevents the combination from offering maximum capacity and performance. The phenomenon of memory effect, which causes older rechargeable batteries to retain less of their total charge...

Choosing rechargeable batteries and chargers

The process of buying rechargeable batteries to replace the single-use versions that power your numerous gadgets generally begins with a starter kit that includes a charger and a minimum of two batteries. Shapes, sizes, capacities, and prices vary, as you see in the following sections. Basic AA and AAA rechargeable-battery kits The types of rechargeable-battery kits that I often spot at drugstore chains and larger grocery stores are typically made by Duracell, Energizer, Eveready, and Rayovac. The kits charge as many as four AA or AAA batteries or a combination of the two types. The approximate price of each type of kit is included in this list Recycling dead rechargeable batteries completes the recycle portion of the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle). Turn to the section Properly Disposing of Dead Batteries, at the end of this chapter, to find out how to recycle yours. Finding rechargeable batteries and chargers for sizes less common than AA and AAA such as 9-volt, C, D, and...

Buying rechargeable batteries for less

Several specialty battery seller Web sites (see the earlier section Less common and wider-reaching chargers) stock replacement-battery packs for your cellphone or smartphone, PDA, GPS tracker, cordless landline, digital camera and camcorder, answering machine, and lots of other gadgets. Checking your gadget manufacturer's Web site for replacement rechargeable batteries is one option however, you can often find a compatible fit for less money at reseller sites. These additional sellers specialize in replaceable rechargeable batteries for notebook computers and mobile phones

Replacing rechargeable batteries in iPods iPhones and other sealed gadgets

Replacing the rechargeable battery inside an iPod or MacBook Air or another sealed device isn't as easy as simply swapping the old one for a new one. Contacting Apple or the maker of another sealed gadget to make arrangements to send in your gadget for a rechargeable battery swap generally ensures an installation of the highest possible quality and the highest price. To help you prepare for your own gadget's battery-replacement microsurgery, search the Web for videos that show you how to open iPods and other sealed devices. Searching for the term replace ipod battery at YouTube turned up nearly 200 videos offering step-by-step replacement instructions.

Rechargeable batteries

Disposing of rechargeable batteries is a heck of a lot easier than disposing of single-use batteries, thank goodness Finding a location that collects dead rechargeable batteries to see that they're properly recycled can take less than a minute of your time, thanks to the nonprofit organization Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC). To find a rechargeable-battery recycling drop-off location near you, follow these steps Other places that accept rechargeable batteries include

Understanding Basic Battery Pluses and Minuses

When you embrace the use of rechargeable batteries, you respect the three Rs Reduce, reuse, recycle. When you replace disposable batteries with rechargeable batteries which are also referred to as cells you can Recycle energy with each reuse, until it's time to retire to a proper recycler the long-life-of-service rechargeable battery Considering that a single rechargeable battery can be recharged and reused hundreds of times, buying and throwing out ordinary batteries is just plain wasteful and potentially hazardous if they're improperly disposed of, because of the mercury and other toxins used to produce them. Find out how to properly dispose of both kinds of batteries at the end of this chapter, in the section Properly Disposing of Dead Batteries. To find out more about disposing of other gadgets and electronic e-waste, check out Chapter 16.

Picturing how long battery types last

Because a digital camera requires lots of power to pull off its digital magic, especially when its flash feature is used, battery makers often point to this device as a real-world measuring stick that most people can relate to. The following minitable provides a snapshot of rechargeable-battery capacity and longevity based on the number of pictures per charge that Rayovac estimates can typically be snapped per battery type. Most battery manufacturers recommend higher-capacity rechargeable batteries for digital cameras, whereas low-powered, low-drain gadgets such as TV remote control devices can run for many months on less pricey rechargeables.

Getting a charge out of chargers

Rechargeable battery chargers are available in many shapes and sizes. The most commonly sold chargers hold two to four AA or AAA batteries, or a combination of both types of batteries. Figure 3-4 shows a typical charger. Although many rechargeable battery chargers look much the same, and you might think that they work the same way, the following charger characteristics can help you determine which charger type best suits your needs Charging speed Charging a rechargeable battery in a pricier fast charger can juice the cells to usable capacity in as little as 15 minutes, whereas a less costly value charger can spend several hours charging a battery to its full capacity. Brand mixing You can charge one brand of rechargeable battery in another brand's charger as long as the other charger is designed to charge the same type of battery (NiMH or NiCD, for example). Charging sensors A smart battery charger has built-in sensors to shut off the charger after the batteries are fully charged....

Maximizing Energy Savings for Your Portable Gadgets

Looking into some gadget energy-saving settings Extending the battery life on mobile gadgets Running mobile applications to track and adjust energy use another one, this is the place to find out how to adjust the energy settings on your portable gadgets to gain maximum battery life on the go while minimizing power consumption.

Digital cameras and camcorders

Just like with your other portable gadgets, making energy-saving adjustments to your digital camera or camcorder that extend battery life can increase the number of shots or hours of footage you can capture. And as with all portable gadgets that have backlit screens, turning down the brightness uses less battery juice. For even longer camera and camcorder battery life Deactivate your digital camera's flash setting and your camcorder's spotlight. Doing so prevents you from accidentally using either feature and extends battery life. Turn them on when you need them, and turn them off when you don't. Stay in charge. Bringing along a second or third rechargeable battery can keep the action rolling throughout the day. Plugging in between shooting sessions to keep the battery topped off is another way to stay in charge of the battery on your camera or camcorder so that it lasts as long as possible.

Select the Show Bluetooth Status in the Menu Bar check box and then click the Close button to close the Preference panel

Turning off the Bluetooth devices that you connect to your Mac, such as a headset and mouse, helps extend their battery life so that you don't need to recharge them so often. My favorite Mac mouse is the Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000, which runs on two AAA batteries (I use rechargeable ones, of course) and automatically enters Sleep mode after a few minutes of inactivity.

The Costs of Provisioning Effort

Some authors have argued that expending energy reduces longevity (e.g., Calder 1985). According to this view, a high workload reduces the life span, in the same way that overusing a flashlight more quickly leads to a dead battery. More recent authors offer more sophisticated interpretations. Some argue that energetic expenditure can reduce longevity by compromising an organism's immune response (Richner et al. 1995), while others argue that reproductive effort accelerates senescence (Gustaffson and Part 1990). If these arguments are correct, and if provisioning involves increased effort, then all provisioning entails a cost of reproduction.

Ecotoxicology of Lead

Lead (Pb) is a naturally occurring metallic element trace concentrations are found in all environmental media and in all living things. However, certain human activities, especially base metal mining and smelting combustion of leaded gasoline the use of Pb in hunting, target shooting, and recreational angling the use of Pb-based paints and the uncontrolled disposal of Pb-containing products such as old vehicle batteries and electronic devices have resulted in increased environmental levels ofPb, and have created risks for Pb exposure and toxicity in invertebrates, fish, and wildlife in some ecosystems.

The Industrial Ecology Of Infrastructure Operations

Such systematic infrastructure data are obviously quite useful to the industrial ecolo-gist they help define the system quantitatively, identify major as opposed to minor material flows (and thus potential impacts) and point towards priorities for management of environmental impacts. It must be remembered, however, that this is the only study of its kind of which the author is aware. Moreover, these data are preliminary, not peer reviewed, and somewhat ad hoc, and reflect the operation of a particular kind of infrastructure (primarily telephony) at a particular point in technological evolution in a developed economy. Thus, for example, one would expect scrap rates for many developed country telephony systems to be reaching a peak as telephone switches are replaced by Internet protocol routers, and the assumption that virtually all lead acid batteries are recycled, which is valid in countries such as the UK, may not hold in many developing countries. In addition, recent technological...

Toxic Material Discharges

There is a strong trend in the computer industry towards lighter and, in many cases, portable machines. These smaller machines have lower material demand, contain fewer toxic materials (except the batteries) and tend to be energy-efficient. Batteries are of particular concern because of their high toxic content, their relatively short lifetime and their tendency to be mixed with other solid waste. The heavy metal content of batteries is a significant contributor to the toxicity of municipal solid waste incinerators. Unlike the case of car lead acid batteries and recycling systems common in Western Europe, the USA does not have comprehensive systems in place for recycling computer batteries. Some computer manufacturers accept returned batteries for recycling, but the practice is not widespread. Lankey and McMichael (2000) compare the economic, resource and environmental impact for single-use and rechargeable batteries using a method based on Leontief input-output analysis. This work...

Recyclable Materials 40 Cfr 2616

Recycled hazardous wastes are known as recyclable materials. These materials remain hazardous, and their identification as recyclable materials does not exempt them from regulation. With certain exceptions, recyclable materials are subject to the requirements for generators, transporters, and storage facilities. The exceptions are wastes regulated by other sections of the regulations and wastes that are exempt, including waste recycled in a manner constituting disposal waste burned for energy recovery in boilers and industrial furnaces waste from which precious metals are reclaimed or spent lead-acid batteries being reclaimed. Wastes generally exempt from regulation are reclaimed industrial ethyl alcohol, used batteries or cells returned to a battery manufacturer for regeneration, scrap metal, and materials generated in a petroleum refining facility. Recycled used oil is subject to used oil management standards (Part 279 of RCRA).

Mobile tracking

When tracking on foot, it is important to have lightweight, robust receivers with simple controls. Many receivers are not waterproof, in which case it must be possible to operate them through plastic bags during rain. A light source is useful at night, and headphones or an ear-plug make it easier to detect faint signals and changes in signal strength. For directional tracking at short range, it should be easy to reduce the signal reception gain to a level at which signals from nearby tags are only just detected. Power supplies should last for at least the length of a tracking day, with reserve power sources available (e.g. plug in battery packs in case an overnight recharge has failed). Antennas should be light and not cumbersome. Yagi antennas with 3 4 elements are very suitable, to give optimal gain and directionality, and can now be obtained with flexible elements that do not impede passage through brush.

Collecting the Data

First, it is still important to be able to trap the animals to fit them with radiocollars in the first place, and to retrap them whenever the transmitter is lost or the battery runs down. In animal transmitter packages, the batteries use more space and weigh more than all other components combined. A weasel's small size limits how big a transmitter package it can carry and, hence, how long the package will transmit. Weasels are often uncooperative about returning to have their transmitters serviced, which is a problem because battery life can only be short for small transmitters. At present, even the most efficient systems can provide no more than 6 months of battery life (Gehring & Swihart 2000), although that is a distinct improvement over the 30 days expected at best from early transmitters for weasels (Erlinge 1977b). Third, the range of any transmitter is usually short (from 50 to a few hundred meters in thick vegetation) compared with a weasel's daily movements. Range can be...

Offsite Recovery

If the amount of waste generated on-site is insufficient for a cost-effective recovery system, or if the recovered material cannot be reused on-site, off-site recovery is preferable. Materials commonly reprocessed off-site are oils, solvents, electroplating sludges and process baths, scrap metal, and lead-acid batteries. The cost of off-site recycling depends upon the purity of the waste and the market for the recovered materials.

Toxic Substances

Batteries play an important role in the recycling of toxic substances. Batteries represent a 2.5 billion-a-year market. At present, practically no batteries are being recycled in the United States. Battery manufacturers feel that recycling is neither practical nor necessary instead, they feel that all that needs to be done is to lower the quantities of toxic materials in batteries. It is estimated that 28 million car batteries are landfilled or incinerated every year. This number contains 260,000 tons of lead, which can damage human neurological and immunological systems. The billions of household batteries disposed of yearly contain 170 tons of mercury and 200 tons of cadmium. The first can cause neurological and genetic disorders, the second, cancer. Some batteries also contain manganese dioxide, which causes pneumonia. When incinerated, some of these metals evaporate. The excessive emissions of mercury were the reason why Michigan temporarily suspended the operation of the...

Removing Iron Salts

Lead is used mainly in various solid forms, as pure metal and in several compounds. Major uses are storage batteries, bearings, solder, waste pipelines, radiation shielding, sound and vibration insulation, cable covering, ammunition, printer's type, surface protection, and weights and ballasts. Wastewaters containing lead originate from only a few of the processes that produce lead-containing products, such as plating, textile dyeing and printing, photography, and storage battery manufacturing and recycling.
