Pad Contamination

Intact pads of C. fastuosa beetles were not absolutely clean but bore some contaminating particles of unknown origin on the surface of their setal tips (Figures 7.3A to 7.3D). After walking on the glass plate covered with dust, pads were rather strongly contaminated by large dust particles covering large areas of pads (Figures 7.3E and 7.3F). The particles usually got stuck between setae and contaminated setal tips only

at some places. In the case of plant wax contamination, wax material adhered only to the setal tips' surface (Figures 7.3G to 7.3L, Figure 7.4, and Figure 7.5). Dust and wax contaminations may be distinguished easily because of the particles' dimensions and the nature of the contamination.

Pad contamination by wax crystals differed greatly in both nature and degree, depending on the plant species (Figures 7.3G to 7.3L, 7.4, and 7.5). In some plants
