As this book goes to press, news is emerging of some radio-tagged Bar-tailed Godwits Limosa lapponica tracked on spring migration from New Zeland. Six birds accomplished the journey from New Zeland to the north end of the Yellow Sea in China in a single non-stop flight, covering more than 10 000 km in about seven days. (A seventh bird broke its journey in Micronesia and Japan.) They then refuelled for the second stage of their journey to breeding areas in eastern Siberia and Alaska (web-based information from the Western Ecological Research Center, Sacrimento, California).
