The Birds Involved

Of the landbirds that breed in the Palaearctic region (comprising most of Eurasia), about 186 species winter wholly or partly in Africa south of the Sahara, and another 29 seabird species winter on the seas and coasts, giving about 215 species altogether (Table 24.1). Some 193 of these migrants are drawn from the western Palaearctic, the region lying immediately to the north of Africa, with a smaller number (178) also coming from the mid-Palaearctic between 45°E and 90°E (Table 24.1).
