Fig. 11.3. The percentage of worker bumble bees of four age categories (1 = youngest, 4 = oldest) that were either captured by bee wolves ("prey") or collected at the same flowers ("field"). The field sample represents the available age distribution, while the prey reflects the age bias in the wasps' catch. The bias towards young workers of both bee species was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The total number of bees was 71 prey and 64 field Bombus bifarius, and 72 prey and 92 field B. occidentals. (Data from Armitage 1965.)
