industrial ecology The study of the flow of energy and materials from their natural sources through the manufacturing process and its products to their final disposal or recycling. It provides useful information for devising strategies to minimize pollution and reduce the consumption of energy, water, and other resources.

industrial ecosystem An industrial system that mimics a natural ecosystem in that the wastes from one industrial process form the raw materials for another.

industrial melanism An increase in dark forms, for example in the moth Biston betularia, in industrial soot-polluted environments. Natural selection against normal pale forms by predators results in dark offspring being at a selective advantage in such environments. This results in an increase in the numbers of the better camouflaged dark forms. See also polymorphism.
