Abstract

Growing populations and increased wealth are generating enhanced demand for water, while climate change threatens traditional supplies. Water availability and quality are also under pressure from energy limitations, land use decisions, and the requirements of industry and minerals processing. In this chapter, metrics are developed for water management and for energy management as a component of water provisioning. Sustainable water management, increasingly a systems analysis activity, will be one of the great challenges of the twenty-first century.
