• Dissecting instruments: a pair of strong scissors, scalpels (with removable blades), two pairs of watchmaker's forceps, one round-tipped forceps, one fine (retina) scissors.

• Light microscopes: stereo (dissecting) microscope with direct and substage light and an accessory objective lens to give a magnification of about X80; compound microscope to magnification of X400 with eyepiece and stage micrometer. Drawing tubes are desirable on both microscopes.

• Access to a scanning electron microscope is desirable.
