Part C Biological Processes

Part 3 of this chapter deals with some complex processes of great interest for ecological modelling and includes a description of the modelling techniques of:

• biogeochemical cycles of the most important elements of an ecosystem;

• photosynthesis, because it is the process that accounts for the primary production which is at the basis of any ecosystem;

• growth of a single population of primary, secondary producers and of individuals.

Single and simple processes involved in these more complex processes are not always strictly biological because they also involve physical and chemical processes. We have included them in this part because they are usually strongly connected to those biological processes that cannot be listed under the previous parts.
