Ascendency calculations

Eutrophication can be described in terms of network attributes as any increase in system ascendency (due to a nutrient enrichment) that causes a rise in TST that more than compensates for a concomitant fall in the mutual information (Ulanowicz, 1986). This particular combination of changes in variables allows one to distinguish between instances of simple enrichment and cases of undesirable eutrophication.
