The geophysical data along with the core and grab samples were analyzed to classify the river bed deposits. The sediment classification scheme included classes based on the major morphologic features, grain size, and sediment bedforms. Additionally, we identifiedexposedbedrockand anthropogenic deposits. Preliminary results for Area 1 are presented here (Fig. 5.11). Similar results are available from NYSDEC for all four areas. From combined analysis of the benthic mapping data sets we have classified the Tappan Zee study area into four major deposits: channel axis, channel bank, marginal flat, and anthropogenic deposits. In addition, sites of recent sediment accumulation are identified.
