Child care and the epidemiology of CMV infection

Prior to studies of CMV infection in day-care centers, two features of CMV epidemiology were well accepted: prevalence of infection increases directly with increasing age, and the main source of CMV infections in young infants and toddlers is their mother. Accordingly, it might be expected that in any population, prevalence of CMV infection would be higher in adults than in children, and it would be very uncommon to find CMV infection in young children whose mothers had never had CMV However, with rigorous study it became clear that the primary social environment for breeding infection was child day care-centers rather than the home.
