Lessons from the tsunami

On 4-6 May 2005, the WHO sponsored a conference entitled "Health Aspects of the Tsunami Disaster in Asia" in Phuket, Thailand (WHO, 2005c). The conference involved 400 senior policy advisors and experts from Asia and other parts of the world, and included representatives from the UN, various governments, non-governmental organizations, and academic institutions, and representatives of countries and organizations that provided relief assistance after the tsunami.

The major objectives of the conference were to review the health-care experience, identify components that could have been done better, and tabulate lessons learned for future natural disasters. The following is a brief summary of the most important conclusions from this conference (www.who.int/hac/events/tsunami-conf/proceedings/en/print.html).
