Prevention approaches for IDU and nonIDU disease transmission

What then are effective HIV prevention strategies that do not focus on supply reduction or insist on abstinence? Effective strategies range from drug treatment and drug substitution therapy, such as methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) and buprenorphine, to harm-reduction measures, including education regarding safer injecting and sex practices. Equally important are access to clean needles and syringes (e.g. through needle and syringe exchanges), voluntary counseling and testing, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. Finally, peer educational and behavioral interventions are especially relevant and efficacious in at-risk populations, including sex workers who inject drugs, and prisoners.
