approximately 30 (Roces and Lighton 1995). This metabolic activity is the consequence of high mass-specific metabolic rates of the mandibular muscles (194 Wkg-1, insect flight muscle varies from 300 to 3000 Wkg-1), and a high mandibular muscle mass (>25 per cent of total body mass). Despite the wide variety of reasons for variation in metabolic rates, we will deal in detail with just three of these, viz. flight, pedestrian locomotion, and feeding.
