The mosaic is the result of different opposing forces or mechanisms, and the study of these structures helps us to better understand ecosystem functions. Forecasting changes of function in the ecosystem through study of the land mosaic is increasingly attracting the attention of scientists. Recently, Bogaert et al. (2002) utilized the shape of mosaic greenness to investigate the behavior of different biomes under global warming. This research is extremely useful for forecasting changes in ecosystem structures around the world.
A mosaic can evolve or it can collapse, both conditions modify the relationships between organisms and their environment.
Evolution in a mosaic means an increase in diversity and complexity of composing patches by internal as well as by external constraints born from self-organizing functions.
