Areas with Moderate Precipitation

Zones of moderate precipitation are spread over all the continents and naturally enough form a boundary between extremely dry and extremely wet regions. However, the precipitation falls in greatly varying amounts over the course of the year. The following basic types can be observed:

• precipitation falls during the whole of the year, but more in summer than in winter; this type is widespread in the moderate climate zone (e.g., Berlin, Figure 8);

• precipitation falls during the whole of the year, but more in winter than in summer (e.g., Tromso, northern Norway, Figure 9); and

• hardly any precipitation occurs during summer, countries north of the Mediterranean Sea, North California, central Chile, the southern tip of Africa and Southwestern Australia (e.g., Rome, Figure 10).
