The bottom-up approach is one of the fundamental approaches to modeling the structural dynamics of an ecosystem. In this approach, the structure of an ecosystem network is determined on the basis of experimental and observational knowledge. Actually, some of the important and dominant components from the viewpoint of the modeling are selected and introduced into the model. The kinetics of material flows is also formulated in the same manner. Of course, there are many types of experiments and observations available. In this approach, the selection of adequate experiments and observations, and a reasonable processing method of the obtained data are important.
