Equilibrium Sustainability and Maximization

These three concepts are widely used in fishery models. In the context of a deterministic analysis, a sustainable yield Ye is one that can be taken every year, the result being a population in equilibrium. Under models with density dependence, a population can reach equilibria at various levels of removals; therefore, each equilibrium stock size has a corresponding sustainable yield, Ye > 0.

A particularly durable concept is that of maximum sustainable yield (MSY), which is generally conditioned on some pattern of removals (e.g., taking fish starting at a certain age). In general, Ye = MSY occurs at some intermediate stock size.
