Food webs

Food webs describe the connection of plants and animals which depend upon each other referring to the flow of energy. Organisms are assigned to different trophic levels that classify their position in the food chain which is determined by the number of energy transfer steps to that level. In general, food webs become more complex during the development of a system. Hence, their structure and composition can be used to assess the condition and stage of development of a system. Network theory plays an important role for the interpretation of food web structures.
