Rationale for Use of Ecotoxicological Modeling in Risk Assessment

Like most mathematical models, ecotoxicological models are used to describe quantitative relationships among variables to predict a given outcome. Ecotoxicological models build upon empirical observations of the effects of chemicals on individual organisms or groups of organisms (e.g., mesocosms) under laboratory settings and occasionally under field conditions. In conjunction with other lines of evidence, such as toxicity testing and field surveys, ecotoxicological models are an invaluable asset to progress beyond the traditional ecological risk paradigm and can provide increased ecological relevance in risk estimates.
