Temporal Characteristics of LAI

Figure 8 shows an example of monthly mean LAI for some major plant functional types (PFTs). The monthly data are combined from the 8-day MODIS LAI product for North America in 2001. LAI shows clear intra-annual vegetation cycle except within the evergreen broadleaf forest. The maximum yearly LAI undulation is observed for deciduous forests. The standard deviation for PFT is higher in the summer and lower in the winter. The increase in LAI from springtime to summertime typically ranges from 1.0 to 2.0 for shrubs, grass, and crops.
