Significant amount of PAHs dissolved in water, sorbed to particulate matter and sediments, and within microorganisms and plankton can be accumulated by these animals via surface diffusion or diet. Future toxicological research with invertebrates should focus on both dissolved and sorbed PAHs to better characterize the dominant processes of accumulation.
