Toxic Impacts on Marine Organisms Invertebrates

Many invertebrates, such as bivalves and some crustaceans, are filter-feeding species, physically and biologically interacting with both water and sediments. Significant amount of PAHs dissolved in water, sorbed to particulate matter and sediments, and within microorganisms and plankton can be accumulated by these animals via surface diffusion or diet. Future toxicological research with invertebrates should focus on both dissolved and sorbed PAHs to better characterize the dominant processes of accumulation.
