Units

The biodegradation rate can be expressed by application of a wide range of units:

1. By the first-order reaction rate, k, see the equation above, for instance 1/24 h.

2. As half-life, for instance, hours or days or years.

3. Milligram per gram sludge per 24 h to indicate the biodegradation rate in a biological treatment plan, milligram per gram 24 h. Gram bacteria per gram sludge can be used to convert this unit into 4.

4. Milligram per gram bacteria per 24 h to indicate the biodegradation rate, milligram per gram 24 h.

5. BODx/BODinfinite. This ratio indicates the biodegradation in oxygen demand after x days compared with the complete biological degradation.

6. BODx/COD. This ratio indicates the biodegradation in oxygen demand after x days compared with the complete chemical degradation expressed in oxygen demand, COD.
