Microbial biomass carbon is calculated as:

(TOC [F] - TOC [NF]) + K where K = 0.38 (Vance et al., 1987).


Sample blanks should be run with all preparations and the results should be used to correct values above.

All glassware (volumetric flasks, Erlenmeyer flasks) and plasticware (Nalgene sample bottles) must be acid-washed (10% HCl) and dried before and after use.

The K2SO4 soil extracts can be used for several analyses other than TOC, for example, microbial nitrogen (NO3 and NH4) (see Cabrera and Beare, 1993; and Jenkinson, 1988) or microbial phosphorus and sulfur (see Page et al. 1982).
