A clear polycarbonate tube 5 centimeters (cm) in diameter and 1.8 meters (m) in length is used as a minirhizotron. Each tube is marked with a groove and depths are stamped with reverse numbers externally at 10-cm intervals. A single groove etched along the length of the tube is used as a reference for orienting the video camera. The section of tube exposed above the soil surface is wrapped with black plastic tape and the top is plugged with a rubber stopper to keep light from entering the minirhizotron. The bottom end of each tube is sealed with a polycarbonate stopper.
