Getting Data from the Videotape

The numbers of roots in the 2-cm wide strip observed are counted for each 10-cm length of the tube. Counts are independent of the length or the diameter of the root at the interface. If a root branches it receives one count for the main root and one for each branch. Whenever a root crosses the depth indication groove it receives one count in each depth interval.

Convert root counts to root length densities (RLD), as cm/cm3, using the equation

where N is the number of intersecting roots, d the outside diameter of the tube, and A the area of tube observed. (Upchurch and Ritchie, 1983; Upchurch and Taylor, 1990)
