Experimental approaches such as these must be interpreted with caution. Usually more than one component of the system is modified by manipulations, be they chemical or physical ones (Crossley et al., 1990). Other approaches, such as tracer methods and laboratory microcosms, need to be used in conjunction with manipulative experiments. Biocides such as naphthalene may alter other system components, sometimes to a large extent. Naphthalene, for example, may suppress microbes. However, González et al. (2001) reported higher microbial biomass when naphthalene was used to exclude soil fauna.
