The snail darter is a small fish that would have been threatened by the construction of a dam in Tennessee. Opponents of the dam used the ESA successfully to stop the project and protect the snail darter's habitat. However, many people did not feel that the survival of a tiny fish should have a higher priority than a project that would have huge economic advantages for the region.
