Air sparging is a promising technology which has several advantages. Air sparging can extend the effectiveness of SVE systems to include volatile contaminants from the saturated zone, and the contaminants can be treated onsite without removal or potential public exposure to them. In addition, air sparging can expedite groundwater cleanup. The technology, however, is limited to aquifers with high permeability and contaminants with high volatility. In addition, the technology is relatively new, and the number of case studies where the technology has been successfully applied is limited.
