Column Height

The required height of an absorption column is determined primarily by the degree of pollutant removal and the masstransfer characteristics of the system. The degree of pollu tant removal can be represented by the number of transfer units (NTU) which is a function of the average driving force for mass transfer and the degree of separation as follows:

where y and y* are the mole fraction of the pollutant in the gas phase and in equilibrium with the contacting solvent, respectively. The mass-transfer characteristics include the fluid properties, operating conditions, and column internal parameters. The following equation expresses these effects:
