minimum flue gas emissions can be established (see Figure 3.11.10). This stage establishes the thermodynamic model for the process and utility system.

Next, the design engineer assesses the alternative waste treatment options (see Figure 3.11.10). The design engineer must assess these options by considering the process and its waste treatment systems together and any possibilities for integration between them.

Figure 3.11.10 also shows that some earlier decisions may need to be readdressed after the waste treatment options and considered. At each stage, pinch technology establishes the economic tradeoffs.
