Design Considerations

The design variables for an air sparging system include the volatility and concentration of the compound, the porosity and permeability of the soil, and the temperature of the water. Given those variables, environmental engineers can determine the radius of influence of the air sparge wells, the air flow rate, and the vacuum pressure needed. Although the technology has been used at several sites (Loden and Fan 1992), references to the design of an air sparging system are limited (Sellets and Schreiber 1992; Marley, Li, and Magee 1992), and in most cases the design is based on empirical formulas or the results of pilot studies.
