The improvement analysis component of LCA is a systematic evaluation of the need and opportunities to reduce the environmental burden associated with energy and raw material use and waste emissions throughout the life cycle of a product, process, or activity. Improvement analysis has not received the immediate attention of the LCA methodology development community. Improvement analysis is usually conducted informally throughout an LCA evaluation as a series of what-if questions and discussions. To date, no rigorous or even conceptual framework of this component exists. Ironically, this component of the LCA is the reason to perform these analyses in the first place. SETAC has tentative plans to convene a workshop in 1994 (Consoil 1993).
