Different burner spacing has essentially no effect on the NOx concentration in boiler emissions when the boilers are at full-load operations. However, at a reduced load, closer burner spacing results in higher NOx releases because close burner spacing inhibits effective bulk recirculation into the primary combustion zone.

The distribution of air, through the primary air ducts located immediately above and below the fuel nozzles and through the secondary air ducts located immediately above and below the primary ducts, can be used as a means to reduce NO emissions.
