Medical Waste

Medical generators include hospitals and clinics, research facilities, and private medical offices. More than 120 million medical procedures using radioactive materials are conducted annually in the United States (SNM 1988). Relatively large doses of isotopes, frequently powerful gamma emitters with short half-lives, are used in clinical procedures. Medical waste volumes were historically too large due to improper classifications. Rising disposal costs have improved proper classification.
