Process Characteristics

The wet air oxidation process has three basic reaction mechanisms: hydrolysis, mass transfer, and chemical kinetics. Table 11.14.6 gives brief explanations of the mechanisms and their major influences. The four basic steps encountered in the oxidation of hydrocarbon pollutants are:

Hydrocarbon + oxygen ® alcohol Alcohol + oxygen ® aldehyde Aldehyde + oxygen ® acid Acid + oxygen ® carbon dioxide + water
