Solids Disposal

Whether a mechanical clarifier, a settling lagoon or other means of solids removal is utilized, concentrated carbon slurry or sludge must be disposed of. Disposal methods include incineration, landfill disposal, reuse, and dewatering. Removal and disposal of concentrated solids slurry is the most difficult part of the carbon clarification system.

Eliminating waste at the source is ideal. Tightening production controls and modifying the process can drastically reduce waste losses and should be investigated before any removal system is developed. No treatment system is justifiable without assurance that waste production is minimized at the source. Frequently, waste carbon is a product loss, and recovery is valuable. Keeping carbon out of wastewater prevents problems in waste treatment.
