Technology Standards

Permits for discharges of pollutants into the waters of the United States are subject to the NPDES effluent limits and permit requirements. Such source standards are generally based upon the best available technology (BAT). These technology standards can be effluent guidelines, effluent limits, and the definition of BAT.

Effluent guidelines define uniform national guidelines for specific pollutant discharges for each type of industry regulated. These are not, in fact, guidelines but are regulatory requirements. Federal effluents guidelines and standards cover more than fifty industrial categories, as shown in Table 4.5.2.
